Yeah! I was there too! and proud to see one of my pic i took here!
Beautiful gig
This recording showcases the first out of only two times Fugazi performed on the island of Sicily, Italy, the other occasion having taken place a couple of years down the line, in October 1999, of which no public recording is available at this point, unfortunately. Both times, the band played an outdoor show, at the Catania harbour.
According to a certain Agostino Tilotta and some other sources, the gig was broadcast all over Italy on national radio (Rai) through the program Stereonotte.
As to the set list, it is interesting to note that opener Joe #1 flows directly into And The Same, a song dubbed Joe #2 early on, before shaping up to become the swaying, bass-driven staple which appears on the 1989 Margin Walker EP.
In total, this live recording includes 21 songs. Red Medicine (which had been released about a week prior to the gig) delivers 6 of these, with 4 tracks taken from In On The Kill Taker, another 4 from the Repeater album, 3 each from the 7 Songs EP and Margin Walker EP, and just 1 song from the 3 Songs 7 inch. Rather remarkably, not a single song from the Steady Diet of Nothing album is featured here.
I once read that Guy’s father holds the Italian nationality yet was born and raised in the French-speaking part of Lebanon. I do not know if there is any truth to this, but I can say that Guy discloses some family history here in Catania, “this is our first time here in Sicily, and it’s uh, from my family, I come from a family called Picciotto, and they haven’t been here, the D.C. chapter hasn’t been represented here in a hundred and fifty years, so it’s very nice to be back, a marker of sorts”, after which Ian quips, “it’s been even longer for the MacKayes.”

Notwithstanding some minor sonic glitches causing the occasional volume drop or monaural cuts (notably during Suggestion) and the drums sounding a bit muffled or flat, this recording sounds really engaging and captures a true gem. An overall strong, honest and virtually flawless performance (do note that Sieve-Fisted Find is interrupted because of what appear to be some safety issues).
Pressed for a highlight, and I will just stick to one highlight this time around (although the opening guitar hooks of Merchandise are finger licking delicious), I’d definitely go with another stand-out rendering of Promises, since the alternating, at times interweaving paired guitar play once again works its magic.
You will do what you do
I will do what I do
We will do what we do
Rearrange and see it through
Go where you think you want to go
Do everything you were sent here for
Fire at will if you hear that call
Touch your hand to the wall at night
Promises. Words.
And so it goes.

Please Note: Available recordings have been mastered to correct for volume shifts, drop outs, etc. but some sonic anomalies will still exist, especially early in the set when the mix is being settled. The band has rated each show for sound quality and set the general price of a download at $5 per show. If you have a different price in mind feel free to utilize the alternative pricing option.
