This recording gave me a reason to read up on the tragic events that occurred at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. Considering that the events at the time resulted in a violent and deadly confrontation between student protesters and the Ohio National Guard over the strongly contested US involvement in the Vietnam war and the Nixon administered incursions in Cambodia, Fugazi appropriately marked the occasion 28 years later.
Although the band gradually seemed to prefer a less confrontational and more subtle approach during live performances since its inception in the late eighties, and both Ian and Guy Provide only a handful of explanatory words throughout this particular show in 1998, the set list features a selection of songs that speaks volumes.
In this regard, songs such as Facet Squared, Stacks, Target, Long Division, KYEO, Smallpox Champion or Burning Too not only hit the proverbial nail on the head in remembering the 1970 Kent shootings, but (unfortunately) touch on subjects that have been relevant before and ever since.
I very much enjoyed checking out this recording. It sounds overall great and the closing sequence of Closed Captioned into Give Me The Cure into Burning Too is downright brilliant in my opinion. Facet Squared and KYEO are cut a bit short and miss a couple of opening chords, yet this will not keep me from coming back to this recording.
Erik, Hook a brother up with the VHS!
