This is the second out of only three gigs Fugazi played in the state of California on their first US tour. And, much like their show at the Gilman Street Project the night before, the location of the event, Zed Records in Long Beach, surely will have been of significance to the band, Ian especially.
A little bit of browsing learns that Zed Records unfortunately is no longer today, due to the changing environment in music, the internet and the lives of the proprietors Mike and Marlene, yet it is clear that this local music store once must have been quite a landmark within the hardcore and punk community, importing UK punk music as soon as 1977, distributing iconic alternative US releases, and setting up in-store gigs among other activities.
It is in this light that Ian admits to a handful of witnesses at the beginning of KYEO that "it's a great store, I've been selling [Dischord] records here for years". Guy and Ian then take turns using the only available mic, and play a short yet fun and pretty much spot-on set (with the exception of Give Me The Cure, as Joe flubs the ending of the song, and Glueman that feels rushed in my humble opinion but this could be due to the recording itself), interspersed with a bit of discussion on whether or not record stores should sell Skrewdriver albums, on the experience at the Gilman Project the night before, and on the temperature of the water out at the beach. Personal highlights include Burning, Suggestion (still featuring the extended breakdown guitar part), or Furniture.
Even though the sound quality of the recording is marked as "poor" and I can agree that the quality is flawed (Joe's bass can hardly be discerned most of the time with everything else sounding quite shrill), I still enjoyed the recording for what it is: an intimate and lo-fi celebration of East Coast meeting West Coast hardcore kids.
