A really good sounding recording of a great concert that took place in another distinct, wonderful and, above all, historic venue, l’Élysée Montmartre. The recording relates to the fourth out of six times Fugazi would descend upon the city of Paris, and the first time they played this particular concert hall which appears to date back to 1807 and features a metallic structure created by none other than Gustave Eiffel.
Throughout the ages, l’Élysée Montmartre, which began as a ballroom, has been promoting various artistic expressions, including literature, dance, costumed balls, cabaret, cancan, art nouveau. It even hosted revolutionary meetings or organized boxing fights and striptease shows before eventually serving as a concert hall where artists such as David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, The White stripes, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Public Enemy, The Wu-Tang Clan, Missy Elliott, Beastie Boys, Daft Punk, 2 Many Dj’s, The Ramones, Iron Maiden, or Rage Against The Machine packed a full house. The venue closed its doors in 2011 due to a fire, but reopened in 2016.
This 1992 Fugazi live recording features a full 19 songs, with most songs taken off of the Repeater album (7), followed by Steady Diet of Nothing (5), the 7 Songs debut EP (4), the upcoming In on the Kill Taker album (2) and with just 1 song off the Margin Walker EP.
The crowd is welcoming, receptive, and Guy expresses himself in decent French a couple of times in between songs which obviously adds to the colour locale.
Note a well-paced rendering of Suggestion (Ian mysteriously flubs a line here, “under this skin you’ll find some clothes”). Glueman, to close out the gig, is really good as well, even though the band appears to lose the plot in the course of the drawn-out jam (perhaps because Ian was having some guitar issues) and the breakdown feels rather disjointed because of it, packing less punch than it could have.
Never forget this too.
thx so much for the revival
