Right at the end of dc space's existence. They had just got back from Japan and had lots of banter about what they saw there.

*the DC thing in 1991.

We were maybe 18, newly arrived at AU, which we'd a lot of us scammed our way into because we loved the DC music we mailordered from our cornfields and suburban sinkholes hundreds of miles away. And someone must have heard from someone who was way cooler than we that Fugazi was going to play a farewell DC Space show. Me and my one buddy were last to get the word, and were on campus with the sun well set and traditional show-starting time nearing but we knew we had to try. So we started running. We ran to the Metro and got on and then got off and started running again. And we ran all the way to the door of the venue. And there was that sign: "Sold Out". And we asthmatically paced around because you could still at least listen to the show, a lot bands sounded better from out there really. And we must have looked a pretty sad pair, because we weren't going to bother the band, who were propped up against a wall a few feet away waiting to start the show, but one of them pushed off and walked over, and he looked at us for a half second and said "Go on in, tell them you're on Ian's list" -- the serious non-likeliness of which was well expressed by the doorman's look a minute later, but it may also have been some kind of code because he just waved us through -- and one of us just said "Thank you Ian," and it was what I think of now as like a haiku describing all that was right and good about t. Thank you again Ian and everyone.
