Jerry Busher and James Canty formed French Toast in 2001. Friends for more than 20 years, they had performed in a number of D.C. bands — Nation of Ulysses, Make Up, Fidelity Jones, and Fugazi (Busher toured with the group for eight years and played on "The Argument") — but had never collaborated with one another. However, by the early ’00s Busher and Canty both found themselves performing in All Scars, an improv-oriented collective with an ever-shifting lineup. After that group dissolved, they decided to form a band together.
French Toast released an EP, "Bug Man", and a CD single, "Hatred Mace/For Sylvia", through Arrest Records, and in 2005 they released their debut full-length, "In a Cave", through Dischord. Later that year, the band expanded into a trio with the addition of multi-instrumentalist Ben Gilligan. French Toast completed one more record, "Ingleside Terrace", before parting ways in 2006.
