Store Update : The Casual Dots - Sanguine Truth

08.25.22

The band is excited to announce the release of “Sanguine Truth," their second 10-song full-length album, on Christina Billotte's Ixorstix Records and produced by Fugazi's Guy Picciotto. These songs were composed and recorded between 2004 and 2019, at Inner Ear Studios with Don Zientara and at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn with Eli Crews. Spread out between three of the western world’s largest cities, the band members would regroup periodically to add a song here and there. Although the songs were written over a long span of time about various events and themes over the years, many of the album's songs appear particularly relevant to recent times . For example, the lyrics for “Frequency of Fear” were written and recorded in January of 2016, when there was not more than an inkling of the political insanity that would be realized over the next several years. The instrumental “17 Year-Old Locust” was written in 2004, the year of the same locusts that spawned 2021’s Brood X. Then, “Palindrome” is a reminiscence of a friend who decided to depart this world too soon, a situation that seems to be more prevalent than ever in this day and age. This is on clear vinyl.

Store Update: sóley - Mother Melancholia

10.17.21

sóley  - Mother Melancholia

With three solo LPs under her belt, Icelandic musician sóley , is releasing her new concept album, Mother MelancholiaMother Melancholia is the soundtrack to the end of the world as we know it. The new album sees sóley move away from the indie-pop of her previous releases. She began by experimenting with writing songs on the accordion, allowing her a new sense of freedom in her writing. The process allowed her to broaden her horizons even further and experiment with a whole range of new and exciting sounds.  In true soundtrack style, the album flows through the end of the world in chronological order, closing with the Earth’s final moments.  Mother Melancholia is the mark of an artist confidently striding into more experimental territory. Sóley felt compelled to try something new and express the real her. The music might be shrouded in darkness but it’s a move that fills her with joy and freedom.

Store Update: ESCAPE-ISM - RATED Z

09.23.21

ESCAPE-ISM - RATED Z

RATED Z is the new record from minimal rock 'n' roll duo ESCAPE-ISM, the legendary "found sound dream drama"  featuring Ian F Svenonius & Alexandra Cabral.

RATED Z is a declaration of a new underground, distinct from the tedious drivel of self-satisfied corporate indie rock. RATED Z continues Escape-ism's commitment to minimalism, impertinence, and the search for new modes of communication with those fellow travellers who are loath to fall in line with the latest thing. The song "Rated Z" declares Escape-ism's commitment to absolute obscurity, while "Rocker's Delight" outlines a hang out scenario for the fringe elements who rally  to Escape-ism as the last gasp of poetry & playfulness in an oppressive landscape of artless algorithm rock. "Teenage Surrealism PT I & II" delineates a dialogue with a dream, and "Whatever People Say That I Am"  is a soon to be theme song for those who can't be numbered, named, and filed away.

A new, expanded collection of essays and articles from one of the mainstays of the Washington, DC, underground rock and roll scene, The Psychic Soviet is Ian F. Svenonius’s groundbreaking first book of writings. The selections are written in a lettered yet engaging style, filled with parody and biting humor that subvert capitalist culture, and cover such topics as the ascent of the DJ as a star, the “cosmic depression” that followed the defeat of the USSR, how Seinfeld caused the bankruptcy of modern pop culture, and the status of rock and roll as a religion. Not to be missed by those who ride with Irreversible Entanglements, Makaya McCraven, and the International Anthem roster.

Dead Meadow - Feathers

A reissue of D.C.-bred heavy rock/psych band Dead Meadow's fourth album (fifth, if you count that one live record), Feathers. Originally released on Matador in 2005, Feathers found the band -- now a quartet with the addition of guitarist Cory Shane -- supplementing its churning riffs with heady atmospherics and effects, evoking Black Sabbath and also, somehow, Slowdive. Two new tunes by Washington, D.C. all-star garage rock crew, Des Demonas. Features members of Hammered Hulls, Foul Swoops, and Kid Congo Powers & the Pink Monkey Birds. A-side "Bay of Pigs" is an organ drenched derge that evokes The Fall or, maybe, a Jonathan Fire*Eater deep cut. At any rate, it's an excellent addendum to the band's debut LP, which arrived last year via In the Red Records.

Store Update: Indian Summer (DC/VA)
