Holiday Shipping Notice

11.26.07

Please carefully read over our shipping policies so that you can choose the proper shipping method to meet your delivery needs while using our web-store.

All of our shipping times are estimates calculated by the United States Postal Service and are based on the date of shipping (not the date of purchase). The USPS does not guarantee delivery times but we have found them to be fairly accurate.

Domestic Orders: within the continental United States
Domestic orders are processed within 48 hours (weekend orders are processed on Monday) and sent via your choice of USPS MEDIA MAIL (7-10 days), FIRST CLASS (3 days) or PRIORITY MAIL (1-3 days). Shipping charges will be added to the order total based on weight and destination.

According to the USPS, MEDIA MAIL packages are estimated to arrive within 3-10 days of shipping and, in our experience, the vast majority of packages arrive within this time frame. However, in rare instances we have found that MEDIA MAIL can take up to 3 weeks so please keep this in mind for time-sensitive orders.

International Orders
International orders are processed within 48 hours (weekend orders are processed on Monday) and shipped via your choice of First-Class Mail International (delivery time varies), USPS Express Mail International (1-3 days), and Priority Mail International (6-10 days). Occasionally International packages can be held up in customs, which may add to the delivery time. Shipping charges will be added to the order total based on weight and destination.

Returns

If your order arrived damaged, defective or didn't actually arrive at all, please contact us at 703-351-7507 or send an email to [email protected] and we will work quickly to remedy the situation. Please include your name, order number and any relevant information with your correspondence.

The For Callum double CD compilation which was released on Catlick Records to raise money for the care of Callum Robbins, the son of J Robbins and Janet Morgan from Channels, is now also available from the Dischord web-store.

This 32 track double CD features Dischord bands Channels, Medications, Joe Lally along side bands like Mission of Burma, Jawbreaker, Pilot to Gunner, Travis Morrison, Archwelder and many more.

About this compilation:
Approximately 6 months prior to Callum's first birthday, he was diagnosed with with a genetic motor neuron disease called Type 1 SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Although conventional medicine is frequently covered by insurance, alternative procedures & therapies are not. As Janet & J. pursue all available courses of treatment for Callum, the need for additional funds has become increasingly urgent.

The Cultural Society, Catlick Records, & Letterbox compiled this collection of songs in order to raise money for Callum's care fund. Proceeds will go directly to Janet & J. to help ensure that they have sufficient resources to continue their search for effective, lasting treatment. Though our energies here are focused on the plight of our friends, it should be noted that a cure for Callum could also mean a cure for the other thousands of babies who suffer from SMA.

Faraquet To Re-Unite For Shows in Brazil, US

The members of Faraquet have announced plans to re-unite for a Brazilian tour this September and are gathering recordings from their various singles to look into re-issuing them onto a CD compilation
The members of Faraquet have announced plans to re-unite for a Brazilian tour this September and are gathering recordings from their various singles to look into re-issuing them onto a CD compilation. The Brazilian shows will feature a line-up featuring original members, Chad Molter and Devin Ocampo -- but not Jeff Boswell. However, the band hopes to play DC area shows upon the release of the CD with the full original line-up. Faraquet tour dates will be posted on the tours page as soon as they are confirmed.

Fans of Medications, fear not. According to the band members, the Faraquet reunion (Chad and Devin are in both Medications and Faraquet), and news of drummer Andy Becker's recent departure, do not spell the end of Medications. Chad and Devin will continue to move forward with their writing and hope to record a new Medications album later this year or early next.

Meanwhile, Andy Becker has started a new label called What Delicate Recordings which will make its debut with releases from avant - rockers, The Rude Staircase and Condor Moments in September and October respectively.

Mingering Mike: The Amazing Career of An Imaginary Soul Superstar by Dori Hadar is now available from the Dischord Web-store.

Mingering Mike is longtime resident of Washington DC, who from 1968 until 1977 created hundreds of hand drawn album covers, singles, even movie sound-tracks, chronicling his imaginary career as a musical superstar, record producer and record label mogul.

His intricate and beautiful covers remained completely unseen until DJ Dori Hadar discovered and rescued several bins of them while shopping at a local flea market. Hadar, who is also a private investigator, eventually tracked down and befriended Mingering Mike, helped compile his artwork for exhibition and helped free a star from his imagination.

From the Australian re-issue label, Afterburn, comes The Vile Cherubs "The Man Who Has No Eats has No Sweats" CD, a lost document from the late 80's Washington DC Punk Underground. Existing for only a short space of time, The Vile Cherubs came, confused, endeared, and powered out their homage to warped 60's garage psych in chaotic and unique style before imploding into the abyss, leaving an odd LP (split w/ Dischord Records) and a mini legion of fans in their wake. This 14-track CD release collects the best of their studio recordings and adds FIVE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS, with a info booklet of notes, photo's and band history tree from then till now. Members of the Vile Cherubs have been in/currently reside in bands such as the NATION OF ULYSSES, CONCENTRICK, THE QUAILS, CIRCUS LUPUS, CAPITOL CITY DUSTERS, GOLDEN BEARS, THE FUCKING CHAMPS and more! This is a small slice of DC history which is worthy of staying in print for all willing ears.

PASO NUEVO: Black and Brown Voices of Home (the re-mix) - A preview of the upcoming performance at the Gala Theater at the Tivoli.
Come check out the voices of a new generation of Black and Latino Youth. Guest performances from the production's co-directors, Quique Aviles and Sage Morgan-Hubbard.

Lamont Park is located at Mount Pleasant and Lamont Streets NW, in Washington, DC.

Over the last ten years a private citizens group has pressured all the restaurants and bars in Mount Pleasant to give up their right to host live (even acoustic) music, in an exchange for a pledge not to launch expensive challenges their liquor licenses. Now a range of artists, musicians and community groups are fighting back and trying to overturn the ban and bring back the ability of restaurants to host music in a responsible way.

'Hear Mount Pleasant' is organizing a series of mini-festivals this year to build support for the campaign and to showcase the contributions musicians and artists make to building vibrant communities.

We finally have copies available of the Daniel Higgs album, "Ancestral Songs", (on CD and LP) from Holy Mountain Records
We finally have copies available of the Daniel Higgs album, "Ancestral Songs", (on CD and LP) from Holy Mountain Records.

According to Holy Mountain ..."Ancestral Songs is comprised of apocalyptic tunes, a banjo raag, mellifluous birdsong, and the sci-fi-sounding duet of a searing Jew's harp and toy piano. "Are You of the Body?" brings out the electric tamboura tone and an accompanying acoustic guitar to melt the spine. A distorted motorik guitar riff propels Ancestral Songs to a close by focusing on the consistent tone and vibration that flows throughout the album." -- and we believe them!

Expanded Youth Curfew Proposed For DC

06.19.07

In another move to 'fight crime' by decree the Washington, DC City Council will vote today on emergency legislation to expand the summer curfew times from 10pm weekdays (currently 11pm) and 11pm weekends (currently 12am), and raise the restricted age limit from 16 to 17
In another move to 'fight crime' by decree the Washington, DC City Council will vote today on emergency legislation to expand the summer curfew times from 10pm weekdays (currently 11pm) and 11pm weekends (currently 12am), and raise the restricted age limit from 16 to 17.

These expanded hours will not only alienate young people from the very organized events intended to keep them occupied and off the streets in the first place but will put into effect a back-door version of the age restriction on music venues which failed to gain popular, or council, support when proposed earlier this year in an open forum.

We strongly believe that for every restriction put on young people an equal alternative should be offered. Young people are, after all, people and 'out of sight, out of mind' is simply not good enough.

Write to these council members and let them know how you feel:

Postage Increases = End of Postpaid

05.14.07

Owing to the increased postal rates scheduled to take effect today, May 14, we are sad to announce the end of our postage paid (free shipping) option on domestic orders
Owing to the increased postal rates scheduled to take effect today, May 14, we are sad to announce the end of our postage paid (free shipping) option on domestic orders. Over the years we have resisted raising our prices along with previous postal rate increases (we last raised our prices in 1998-99), but realized that with this current increase we would simply lose too much money to continue with the status quo.

Because the post office has taken to raising prices at such a maddening pace, it has become too expensive and confusing to consider changing our postpaid prices. We have decided instead to begin charging postage (note: we will charge actual postage not "postage & handling") on all of our mailorder items. Given that our 'postpaid' approach has been with us since the beginning of the label, this decision did not come easily. However, we prefer to no longer use our straight-forward pricing to cover for what we consider unreasonable, unethical corporate-friendly increases.

If you visit our web-store, at: http://www.dischord.com/store you will find an automatic postage rate calculator in the shopping cart when you login and begin the check out process. There you can select from several USPS services and view their actual rates.

If you want to learn more about what has been going on in the nefarious corridors of the post-office, go here: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070507/stack

To speak out against the proposed rate hikes, go to: http://action.freepress.net/campaign/postal/i78ikk599tdmi86?

For Windows 2000 users-
People who use the combination of Windows 2000 and Internet Explorer (IE) are experiencing navigation errors in the shopping cart. Windows 2000 features some outdated code which has not been addressed in IE (even in the updated versions), so in this instance we recommend downloading and using the Firefox web browser. Firefox is free, more secure than IE and definitely works with these older operating systems.

For Mac, XP and Vista users-
Most problems can be fixed by simply checking a couple things in your web browser's preferences (or settings). Just make sure that javascript is enabled and that your web browser is set to accept cookies . Postal Rate Hike VS. Independent Media (Us!)

04.23.07

The USPS has announced a controversial new postal rate policy, set to begin taking effect on May 14, which will drastically raise the rates most used by small press and independent mail-order businesses while reserving the most favorable rates for the giant media corporations
The USPS has announced a controversial new postal rate policy, set to begin taking effect on May 14, which will drastically raise the rates most used by small press and independent mail-order businesses while reserving the most favorable rates for the giant media corporations. Historically the United States Post Office has recognized its role and responsibility as a publicly subsidized vehicle of democracy by offering favorable rates to individuals and small companies who send out printed and recorded media. Media Mail rates are kept lower to encourage the distribution of news, ideas, art, and the independent voices that are necessary for a democracy to function. In a stunning new decision it seems the USPS has been pressured by major media lobbyists to reverse this course and place the burden of future rate increases on the backs of small business.

According to a letter written by The Nation president, Teresa Stack, " in May 2006 the United States Postal Service proposed a rate increase for periodicals of about 11.7 percent, an increase that would have affected all periodicals more or less equally. Instead, in February the PRC (Postal Regulatory Commission) recommended a version of the rate proposal put forward by Time Warner, which had previously been rejected by the PRC and strongly opposed by the USPS. This proposal would have a disproportionately adverse effect on small national publications while easing the burden on the largest magazines. The decision was followed by an industry "comment period" of only eight working days, an impossibly short time for small publications to digest changes so complex that to this day there is no definitive computer model to fully assess them. Nonetheless, the new rates are scheduled to take effect (no later than) July 15."

We at Dischord have always tried to keep the prices of our records as low as possible because we feel strongly that people should be treated fairly and encouraged to experiment with new sounds and ideas. Since the price of our mail-order records has always included domestic shipping charges these new rates will have an immediate adverse affect on our ability to maintain our current mail-order structure. Rather than the 11.7 % increase first proposed, our costs are scheduled to go up 20-30% for our most basic service. We have resisted raising our prices along with previous postal rate increases but with the current changes it is likely that we will have to either raise our prices significantly or do away with our "Postage Paid" (free shipping) mailing policy.

Although these policies affect us directly, the effects extend well beyond Dischord Records and our artists. These policies will be especially chilling to the many independent magazines, newspapers, record labels, etc. who have had to rely more heavily on direct support from subscribers as media distributors consolidate into large one-stops and drop smaller titles from store racks. We'll have more news on how we decide to address this in the near future but In the meantime we encourage you to read more about these policy changes and voice your support for independent media.

We have been promising a new website for some time and we are pleased to finally be able to unveil what we have been working on -- however, this site is by no means complete and will evolve over time as we continue to add content and make adjustments to some of the features.

The section that has perhaps transformed the most is our store, found under Stuff We Sell -- where you will notice a new layout and a unique navigation which should make it easier to browse through the hundreds of Dischord and Washington DC area releases that we carry. We have also added a lot more information about our bands and this label; including bios, streaming mp3s, news, tour dates, etc. Overall we have tried to balance all this information with easy and clear access to the music.

To make purchases on the site you will now be asked to create a login account, which offers more identity protection for you and more fraud protection for us. Account holders will also be able to tap into our system to check the status or their orders.

Jerrod Blavos, from indierockmedia, and Pau Santesmasses designed and built this site and their vision and hard work has enabled us to expand our capabilities while perfectly maintaining our particular aesthetic. Thanks also to the Bills (Colgrove and Barbot) and Dug Birdzell who created our original website and whose basic design concepts have been brought forward to this site. And a final thank you to Jay Gordon and Bill Dolan at Datapipe for holding our hands through the technical side of this process.

So, browse, enjoy and please pardon any bumps along the way as we get things up and running! If you experience any problems or notice any defects in the site please let us know about it, call us at 703-351-7507, or write at add_hider('dischord', 'Dischord Info',"dischord.com"), we can use the extra eyes!

"Punk Love", the beautiful new book of photographs By Susie Josephson Horgan is now on sale on our store and "Dance Of Days", by Mark Anderson and Mark Jenkins, has been re-printed and is also available now.

Punk Love: Susie Horgan (formerly Susie Josephson) is one of the first great photographers to grow out of and document the early punk scene in Washington DC. Her iconic photographs from the Washington DC punk scene in 1980-'81 are instantly recognizable by people familiar with Dischord Records -- the Teen Idles 7" , The SOA 7", the first Minor Threat 7" and the Flex Your Head LP all use her photos as central themes. Because her perspective is personal, she doesn't view the scene from the outside but as a participant, the result is a documnt of both history and of friendship. Punk Love. Pictures from Punk Love are currently being exhibited at the Govind Gallery in Washington, DC until March 3.

Dance Of Days: Washington, DC's creative, politically insurgent punk scene is studied for the first time by local activist Mark Andersen and arts writer Mark Jenkins. The nation's capital gave birth to the most influential punk underground of the '80s and '90s. Dance of Days recounts the rise of trailblazing artists such as Bad Brains, Henry Rollins, Minor Threat, Rites of Spring, Fugazi, and Bikini Kill, while examining the roots of PMA, straight edge, Dischord Records, Revolution Summer, Positive Force, and Riot Grrrl. This book provides a window on the hidden history of a grassroots rock revolution that burst into the mainstream in the early '90s following the success of Nirvana and its groundbreaking album, Nevermind.

DC Councilman Moves to Ban Minors from Clubs in DC

In response to a the murder of Talesha Ford outside at a nightclub in DC Councilman Jim Graham has introduced emergency legislation to ban minors from venues that serve alcohol. We grieve the senseless loss of another young life on our streets but can't fathom the Councilman's response would be to instantly wipe out a 20+ year effort on behalf of DC's music community to make music and the positive communities it creates accessible to people of all ages.

Since the early 80s DC has built not only a rich musical tradition, but a tradition of using musical bonds to support community activism. Organizations like Positive Force have raised hundreds of thoudands of dollars for local shelters, medical clinics, AIDS outreach, rape centers, etc. -- all through all-ages benefit shows sponsored in nightclubs, church halls and non-traditional music spaces alike. Many of the people who volunteer for groups like Positive Force, and many of the members of the bands that play these shows, are teenagers or were welcomed into this community while in high school or before.

Please write to Jim Graham and Mayor Fenty now and show your support for all ages access to music in Washington, DC.

The following letter was written by Alec Bourgeois on behalf of Dischord Records:

Dear Councilman Jim Graham,

I have read that in response to the senseless killing of Taleshia Ford outside a nightclub in Northwest you are considering offering legislation to the D.C. Council that would ban minors from music venues that also serve alcohol. I have long supported the need to address the violence that is all too common for our young people but I think banning young people from activities that connect them to the District's rich and diverse musical community is both short sighted and ill-considered.

I grew up in Washington D.C. and I started going to concerts in 1979 when I was 14 years old. The choice for me was very clear at that time, find something useful and creative to do or follow the drug addled battle cry of a generation who was destined for this city's worst. I chose the former. Thankfully this was a time when Washington's underground music scene, both punk rock and go-go, was coming into it's own and many of the band members were themselves under the legal drinking age, which at the time was 18 years old. Rather than being segregated to "minor" status we were embraced by fellow musicians and a select group of club owners who encouraged and supported our efforts to take control of our status and find ways to integrate ourselves, as underage audience and band members, into the larger community.

We knew that people were taking a chance on us so took it upon ourselves to show goodwill to local club owners by policing our own shows and drawing "Xs" on our hands to show we were underage so the bartenders knew who not to serve. This cooperation between bands, concert goers and nightclub owners led to the establishment of Washington's world renown all-ages venues, like the 9:30 Club, Black Cat, etc., who tightened up the policies we invented and made them part of their standard operating procedure. I have since toured in both the States and Europe and can tell you first-hand that not only does Washington enjoy an international reputation for musical excellence but is unique in its management of its all-ages music community.

None can argue whether the inclusion and active participation of "minors" in the Washington music community is one of the major reasons for it's initial rise and continued vibrancy. Nor can one argue that the active participation in a community that cares for it's own, offers positive mentors, cultural diversity, and teaches self reliance has saved many, many more souls from the violent and dangerous distractions on our streets than it has claimed.

DC is the home of Chuck Brown, Fugazi, Positive Force and many other musical groups, labels, venues and organizations that work outside the usual boundaries. You must recognize and make the distinction between "watering holes" and responsible community entities. If irresponsible venues need to be held to a higher standard, so be it. However, further segregating and alienating young people from our cultural communities and painting all of the District with the same stroke serves no one, never has, and never will. If you need guidance, talk to Dante at Black Cat or Seth at 9:30 Club and ask their advice on how to maintain a safe and positive atmosphere for all-ages shows that are neither teen dances nor free-for-alls. They have been doing it for more than 25 years and both this city and their businesses are better because of it.

Respectfully,

Alec Bourgeois, Dischord Records
